It was fate that my parents named me Ian. Little did they know it stood for the most fitting acronym… the Indoor Air Nerd.
I’m an indoor air quality (IAQ) consultant based in downtown Chicago. I own a small training and consulting company called Indoor Sciences, Inc. My passion is helping people improve the quality of the air they breathe, and therefore improving their lives.
I first started in the field in 1995. I was a senior at the University of Illinois- Champaign Urbana, when I started working for an indoor air quality and building science consulting firm, Chelsea Group Ltd. In the late 90’s I took some time off to volunteer doing water projects along the Kenya/Ethiopia border with Food for the Hungry.
After coming back from Africa (and being able to speak Swahili), I worked with Chelsea Group again, this time heading up a new training initiative. I got my big break in 2004 when Chelsea Group spun off their training programs for me to start a new company, Indoor Sciences. I still do consulting work for Chelsea Group on a regular basis.
Since starting Indoor Sciences, I’ve been able to work with so many professionals that are passionate and enthusiastic about indoor air quality. I have trained over 2,000 people in some capacity through the years, and I absolutely love what I do.
I started volunteering with the Indoor Air Quality Association in 2003. In 2006, the membership of the organization elected me to serve on the Board of Directors. I was elected by the board to serve as a Vice President in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
I’m also a member of the following organizations:
- USGBC Chicago Chapter
I live in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago with my wife and three kids.
